Moses, one of the greatest prophets, struggled with fear, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and uncertainty. These same struggles often plague the lives of Christians today as we wrestle with what God has called us to do. We know we have been called and sent by God, yet we become paralyzed by thoughts like, “What will they say?”—just as Moses was.
What will they say? Are You sure You want me to do that? I’m not ready! I don’t have the knowledge or expertise. Someone else could surely do a better job than I ever could.
Like Moses, we often bargain with God, looking for an escape from the assignments He gives us. Fear, self-doubt, and uncertainty about the future are some of the very things that hold many believers back from stepping fully into their calling.
Moses Was Being Prepared All His Life for This Assignment, Just as We Are. When God instructed Moses to return to Egypt and lead His people out of slavery, Moses hesitated. He was reluctant to move forward because he couldn’t see the value in what he already possessed. Every experience Moses had faced up to that point had been preparing him for this calling.
Yet Moses said to God, “The people won’t believe me or listen to me.” Despite his lack of confidence and his concern over others’ opinions, God shifted Moses’ focus to what was already in his hand: his rod.
“Then Moses answered and said, ‘But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, “The Lord has not appeared to you.”
What’s in Your Hand?
Like Moses, we all have tools, gifts, and abilities that God wants to use. He longs to shift our focus away from our perceived limitations and toward the endless possibilities of what He can do through us.
When we surrender what we already have to Him—our voices, our knowledge, our experiences, our skills—He can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. What’s in our hands can become a testimony to His power, capable of signs and wonders that glorify Him.
What we hold is greater than we realize. All it takes is the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to what God can do. Let’s not be afraid to surrender everything we have to Him. When we allow God to work through us, He will do exceedingly, abundantly above all we could ever ask or imagine.
We already have everything it takes. It’s in our hand.
Until next time, see you along the God-directed path.
