2 Kings 3 recounts the story of three armies journeying to battle. Along the way, they found themselves in a dire predicament—there was no water for the armies or their cattle. In desperation, the king of Judah sought a prophet of the Lord to seek divine guidance. The Lord, speaking through the prophet Elisha, instructed the armies to dig ditches in the valley.
Even though digging ditches may have seemed unusual, this act of preparation was pivotal for the blessings God intended to pour out. Their obedience to God’s word was crucial; by following God’s instructions in faith and digging the ditches, they positioned themselves to receive the provision and victory that only God could bring.
God is looking for believers who are willing to obey Him, even when the reasons are unclear or the path seems difficult to understand. He desires that those who are called by His name would trust Him at His word and respond with prompt obedience, just as these armies did. No doubt they were exhausted, thirsty, and perhaps unable to fully comprehend why digging ditches was necessary. Yet, they obeyed. They labored in faith, preparing for the blessings God had promised. And as He always does, God showed up—faithfully and powerfully—just as He said He would, in a way that only He can.
As I reflected on this passage, one thing stood out to me: God did not specify how many ditches to dig or how large they should be. He left that up to them. In a way, the size and number of ditches they prepared determined the magnitude of the blessing they would receive. Their level of faith and obedience directly influenced how much they could hold of what God was ready to pour out.
This reminds us that our preparation and faith often set the stage for the blessings God desires to give us. The amount and level of preparation we choose to undertake will directly impact our capacity to receive God’s blessings—which, by the way, are limitless.
The Bible is filled with examples of men and women who stepped out in faith and prepared for God’s blessings. Esther humbled herself before the Lord in prayer, securing divine favor before she approached the king. Noah built an ark in obedience, preparing for the flood before a single drop of rain had fallen. The widow in 2 Kings 4 gathered empty jars in faith, preparing for the miraculous provision of oil that God would pour out. In each case, their preparation was a demonstration of faith, and it made room for God’s blessings to manifest.

The word of God is full of promises, but often, He calls us to prepare in faith before we receive them. Preparation is the hallmark of those who understand that success is not by chance—it is the result of faith, discipline, and readiness to receive what God has in store. Just as the armies had to dig ditches before the water came, we, too, must be willing to take action, trusting that God will do His part. The question is: Are we willing to prepare for what we are praying for?
